Rock & Pencil Art – Nature Captured in Stone and Sketch
Each piece in this collection is a fusion of original pencil drawings, hand-selected Lake Superior stones, and metal leaf accents, creating a unique blend of nature and artistry. Every rock, carefully collected along the shores of Lake Superior, undergoes a month-long tumbling process, revealing its natural beauty before being incorporated into the artwork. The addition of metal leaf represents the sun or moon, bringing a luminous touch to the composition.
From the Shores to the Studio
While out photographing the landscapes of Northern Ontario, Algoma District, and Lake Superior, I began collecting rocks—drawn to their textures, patterns, and uniqueness. Over time, my collection grew, and I looked for a creative way to use them. This led to the development of these one-of-a-kind pieces, where each rock inspires or complements the artwork, becoming part of the scene itself.
Creative Process & Materials
Each artwork is created with a combination of pencil drawings on high-quality watercolor paper, a polished Lake Superior stone, and metal leaf detailing. The polished rock often serves as the foundation of the composition, evolving into an island, tree base, mushroom, or even an inuksuk. Whether starting with a specific rock in mind or experimenting with different stones to match a completed sketch, every piece comes together in a way that feels organic and balanced.
Themes & Inspiration
These artworks are deeply inspired by the natural beauty of Algoma and Lake Superior—scenes of lone trees, forested islands, families of trees, and rocky shorelines. Some pieces feature hand-assembled inuksuks, while others highlight the contrast between delicate graphite lines and the solidity of stone. The goal is to create a connection to the outdoors, evoking the peacefulness of being in nature and the timeless beauty of the landscapes that surround us.

Each piece is one-of-a-kind, as every rock is unique. However, I welcome custom requests and can create a new piece with the same theme or subject upon request. Available sizes include:
